History In 1956, the Andorran ski pioneer Francesc Viladomat installed the first mechanical lift in the principality in Pas de la Casa, under the Pic d'Envalira.
It was the daring idea of a visionary, and marked the birth of the first Andorran resort:
Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig. From then onwards, Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig
grew at the rate of one lift per season.
At the end of the 1980's, the success of the installations and the constant increase in the number of winter sports fans made it possible to extend the skiable domain beyond the Pic d'Envalira. New lifts and ski runs were opened yearly extending over the mountain to Grau Roig. . In 1986, Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig became the first Pyrenean resort equipped with automatic snow cannons.
2003/2004 saw the birth of the Grandvalira ski area. The long awaited linking of Pas de la Casa/Grau Roig and Soldeu El Tarter created the largest ski area in the Pyrenees with 193k of incredible pistes.

With the only road from the north linking Pas de la Casa directly with France, the town is also extremely popular with day tripping French who tend to take advantage of the very competitive food and household goods prices. A cautionary word of warning for those looking to exercise their credit cards is that customs officers in French and Spanish airports will check your purchases. Fines and excess duties for exceeding duty-free limits can be severe and will often result in confiscation. Many airlines will also charge by the kilo for exceeding the luggage allowance stated on their airline ticket for heavy goods.

The beginner?s area is located at the foot of the slopes at resort level, soon progressing to the gentle blue runs that rise above the resort. Improvers and experienced skiers and boarders can continue to learn the technical side whilst covering high mileage every day.
